Belk Corporation Award of Excellence

Four Belk associates, including one at the Gainesville store, have been named winners of the 2016 Belk Award of Excellence, the company’s highest honor given to associates for community service and job performance. The winners were honored at a luncheon hosted by Belk in Charlotte last Tuesday.

Each received a $500 cash prize, along with an additional $1,000 to present to the charity of his or her choice.

The 2016 Award of Excellence winners, who were selected from a group of more than 100 associates nominated across the company, are:

• Jasyn Fowler, Belk of Bel Air Mall, Mobile, Alabama
• Amy McGhee, Belk of West Town Mall, Knoxville, Tennessee
• Vanessa Poinsette, Belk Citadel, Charleston, South Carolina
• Dontrice Stephens, Belk of Gainesville, Gainesville

The annual awards program recognizes associates who best represent the company’s value “to be involved in our communities” and highlights the importance of giving back to communities across the South that make Belk’s growth and success possible. The winners were chosen based on their contributions to organizations and causes that fall within Belk’s community focus areas:  education, breast cancer awareness and research and community strengthening. According to a news release, the winners also demonstrated excellence in their support of Belk-sponsored community service projects, fundraising events and philanthropic activities, as well as exceptional job performance.

Charlotte's Art Pop Street Gallery

EXCLUSIVE: Introducing ArtPop Charlotte's Class of 2018

Let's get it Poppin'

By Ryan Pitkin @pitkin_ryan and Tate Roberts

It's that time of year again.

No, not time to sit in traffic to crawl through a racetrack full of Christmas lights, but to celebrate the local artists we'll be enjoying throughout 2018 ... while we sit in traffic.

On November 30, the Charlotte-based arts program ArtPop held its Class of 2018 Artist Reveal Party, and Creative Loafing is the only publication to bring you all 20 works and the stories behind the artists of ArtPop's fifth class while the party is still going on.  Since ArtPop launched in 2014, the program has featured the works of 80 artists on billboards in Mecklenburg and 10 surrounding counties, as well as on news racks in Uptown Charlotte and on digital display screens at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

impressive University Murals

Hasaan Kirkland  is an associate professor of fine art at Johnson C. Smith University  and is the artist who created this mural for the visual and performing arts program.  The mural depicts what happens in the program and, as quoted by Kirkland, “Something that I really wanted to contribute to the school.”  This is Kirkland first public art piece which he describes as “a newer form of imagery that can be representational or abstract”.
