ARTE NOIR Gallery - Central District Legacy Exhibit [Temporary Exhibit]
The Central District Legacy has been imagined and visually conceived by ARTE NOIR to explore, celebrate, and acknowledge the underlying culture, both old and new, that overlaps and intensifies the sheer uniqueness that creates the CD's identity. The Central District Legacy exhibit showcases honest expressions by visual artists who share their stories about the context in which the past, present, and future are intertwined in a vibrant community experience and the openness of one of Seattle’s cherished neighborhoods.
ARTE NOIR has organized this exhibit by featuring six visual artists Myron Curry, Mohammed Gabriel, Zorn B. Taylor, Akoiya Harris, and Rodney King with a series of works that capture feelings and intuitions about the spirit of the CD from Family, Boys to Men, The Soul and the Smile, and the Color within Community; with color, content, and intentionality, women are signaled as mothers who warm the hearts of our families; the identity of men are captured as leaders through music, activism, and the liberation found in barbershops, the youth are noted as vessels who fill our memories with joy from grade school, neighborhood porches to the football field, and the intimate reflection felt in a smile is personified as a known and favored sensation of safety, community, and home, a through-line of the legacy of the Central District.
